July 19 - 20, 2025 Trail Clearing & Camp Weekend Huerfano State Wildlife Area.

20 Devoted Members, including folks from Arizona and Missouri BCH chapters, cleared over 78 trees across 4 trails and collected all the remaining barb wire on the BLM property. Representatives from BLM and Colorado Parks and Wildlife joined in on the project providing both a UTV and ATV for tree and wire removal. Many thanks to trail bosses Jerry and Chris Amrhein for the detailed planning, coordination and leadership of a huge and successful project.

  • The main purpose of the work project was to clear fallen trees from two trails and to collect the bundles of wire amassed in 2018 and 2019. Figure1 is a map of the trails cleared by FRBCH shown in red ovals. We were able to clear four trails as well as to collect all the remaining wire on BLM property. Nineteen (19) trees were cleared from the first valley (V1), eight (8) from the second valley (V2), forty-five from V3 and six (6) from the upper switchbacks for a total of seventy-eight (78) trees. The limbs from the large pine trees were placed in the shortcuts along the switchbacks to restore the original path. BY clearing the small section of V1 and all of V3, it is now possible to drive an ATV or UTV around this loop. It is still not possible to drive up V2 because previous dead fall was cut short for horses only. The purple ovals show the main areas in which bundles of barbed wire were removed. Wire 1 represents the meadow between V1 and V2. W2 is the meadow above the stock tank. It is now possible to ride through these meadows without fear of horses becoming entangled in wire.

  • 20 hard workers with the final bundles of barbed wire removed.

  • Note pack horse with the chain saw.
