Huerfano State Wildlife Area Trail Work @ Huerfano State Wildlife Area

Rescheduled due to the July wildfires.   All are welcome to attend.  You do not need to be a member to join us.

DETAILS: We are again going to do a work weekend at Huerfano State Wildlife area near Gardner CO. We had such fun and a great turn out last year. We have been asked to do a repeat. We will be taking up old barb wire fencing and clearing trails. Suggest wearing older clothing as it could be torn on the wire and bring gloves. Would be wise to be up to date on Tetanus shot. Pit toilet at campground. Stream water for horses but no potable water so bring your personal water.  See photos on our website here.

DISPERSED CAMP AREA. No electric or hookups and no corrals.  High line, electric fence, or tie horses to trailers. There are no corrals at this location. NO DOGS on work rides or in camp kitchen area. Please keep your dog away from horses. This is for safety for human, dog, and equine alike. It has been dry so Sherry will bring propane fire pit in case there is a wood fire ban. If we are allowed fires, bring some firewood if you have any.
BRING: Your own breakfasts, lunches, dinners, drinks, snacks, and certified weed free hay and feed for your equine. We will set up camp kitchen. Sherry will make a large pot of coffee each morning for everyone.

Thursday September 27
We will be bringing our FRBCH gear to set up the camp kitchen, including pans, stove, propane, dishes, tables and kitchen canopies. Those who can come down Thursday please help do some setup. Everyone will be on their own for evening meal. Some may not be able to arrive until Friday.
Friday September 28
Fix your own breakfast and lunch and be ready to ride and head out at 10 a.m. We will be doing some trail clearing and maintenance. There are a couple dead fall trees to be cut and some work on the trail leading out of camp. The main objective will be to pull up and roll up old barbed wire that is left from old ranch fences. Bring leather gloves and clothing to protect from wire scratches and such.  Friday evening dinner will be a group pot luck meal.
Saturday September 28
Fix your own breakfast and lunch and be ready to head out 10 a.m. We know some folks will be able to travel farther and work and others will prefer to do things closer to camp. We want everyone who will join us to do what they are able.  Saturday evening dinner will be a group pot luck meal.
Sunday September 30
Sunday morning we plan to have a group breakfast, then take down the kitchen and pack up the equipment. If you want to participate, some will go on a fun ride with a lunch on trail before heading home.

DIRECTIONS: from Denver area
Take I-25 South to Exit 56 – Redrock Road (this is north of Walsenburg).
Turn Right at end of ramp and go 2.4 miles to “T”.

After 4.5 miles on the dirt road, bear left at a “Y” onto 580 following a sign for “Lily Lake Trailhead 10 mi.”  At 1.5 miles, there is a small yellow sign marked “Trail” on the left with a left turn going into the main campground. Do not go past — rough road and very hard for trailers.
